Northwestern McGaw Underrepresented Residents and Fellows Forum
The Northwestern McGaw Underrepresented Residents and Fellows Forum& is an interdepartmental group that consists of residents and/or fellows who carry out programming in four areas: mentoring, networking and career development, outreach and strategy and collaboration. Work is focused on (but not limited to) race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation.
STRIVE
The purpose of STRIVE is to create informal, yet structured, mentoring relationships between under-represented minority (URM) medical students and URM residents/fellows to create a foundation of support and community that helps to successfully propel students forward through their medical school years. Our main aim is to provide a foundation of academic, professional, and social support for students from near-peers who also have insight into the unique experience of being a URM trainee in medicine
Northwestern Chicago OUT Network
The Northwestern Chicago OUT Network is a campus- and affiliate-wide networking group for LGBTQ faculty, staff, students, fellows and residents on the Northwestern Chicago campus. Quarterly events draw participants from the medical school, graduate school, affiliated hospitals and clinics. Feinberg also offers Safe Space Training for faculty, staff, students and residents.
Institute for Women’s Health Monthly Forums
The Institute for Women’s Health Monthly Forums were introduced in 2008 to advance women’s health research at Northwestern and to increase awareness among health professionals, scientists and consumers that sex and gender matter in health and disease. Through the monthly forums, the institute provides a platform for leading professionals to present their evidence-based research that focuses on basic science, clinical applications or social implications of sexual dimorphisms.
VSAS Transition to Pediatrics: A Virtual Elective for URM Medical Students
At Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago we embrace the diversity of our faculty, workforce, and trainees as a great strength. We welcome you to learn more about our institution while we teach you more about pediatrics in this fully virtual two week elective available for medical school credit. Through case-based scenarios, simulations, patient care discussions and dialogue with residents and faculty, students will be introduced to the wide breadth of clinical, teaching, advocacy and research efforts taking place at our institution. Students will engage in discussions about challenges facing underrepresented minorities in medicine and understand some of the efforts being made to work toward eliminating these barriers. Through engagement with faculty across the institution, students will have the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships and learn more about their own specific areas of interest.
Additional information
Rotation fee is waived for participants in virtual elective. Credit / No Credit grading based on attendance and participation in required activities, completion of weekly reflections on topics discussed, completion of end of rotation presentation, professionalism and engagement. Insurance cards and immunization forms not required for virtual rotations; please upload a blank document.
Goals and Objectives
- Students will apply pediatric knowledge to case-based scenarios, simulations and patient care discussions to prepare for pediatric internship.
- Students will be introduced to the wide breadth of clinical, advocacy and research efforts taking place at our institution and have the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships with faculty with similar interests and/or backgrounds.
- Students will identify and discuss challenges faced by underrepresented minorities in medicine and understand some of the efforts being made to work toward eliminating these barriers.
Prerequisites
Core clerkships in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and surgery. Participants must identify as meeting criteria for underrepresented in medicine. We define the following groups as underrepresented: Black (African/African American), Latino/Hispanic (Mexican American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central American, South American), Native American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, LGBTQ+, and from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
